The luxury market can be slightly difficult to break into. It often time consists of word of mouth referrals, and if you're just breaking into the industry, it may take some time to pick up luxury clients. However, a luxury market is nearly every designer's dream, since it means higher budgets and more opportunities to put together portfolio worthy work. Although luxury jobs do have a bigger paycheck, jobs in the luxury industry may not be as consistent, at least not until you have built a strong and reputable brand. If you are just starting out in the design industry, we recommend working your way up from smaller projects and into bigger ones, unless you have the connections to start big. This way, you can get paid and get experience starting from the beginning and working your way up.

A larger budget makes it much easier to find the right pieces for a client. Which means going shopping for the perfect decoration and furniture can be a blast. A limited budget restricts a client’s vision, and most client’s dream bigger than their bank accounts allow. Not necessarily the case when it comes to the luxury niche. Another unique aspect of the luxury market is getting to work with designer or antique one-of-a-kind pieces, that makes shopping a whole lot more exciting.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH HIGH END CLIENTS

  • Hard to break into the luxury industry.

  • Higher price points give more freedom to purchase the right pieces.

  • Bigger paydays, but not as consistent in jobs.

  • Tends to be a word of mouth industry, which means you will need to work hard to break into the right "circles."
